ECU Iron Pour

Twice a year the sculpture department at ECU hosts an iron pour. The autumn weather is perfect for a pour, providing a wonderful setting to watch hot iron cast into molds! It's the best to celebrate the cooler weather and make some awesome large scale pieces.

I really enjoy watching the process because it's amazing to witness the properties of liquid metal poured and shaped into new objects. This semester I'm taking a sculpture class and to my surprise, I'm really enjoying it. I thought I'd have hard time with it but I love welding (mig welding specifically) and learning how to creatively think on a bigger scale.

Chris Wooten's giant pumpkin - ready for the iron!

HOT iron - watch out!

My friend Sam Woitovich

Several sand molds absorbing the iron.

And here is short video I took of the pour (*ignore my bad commentary!)

Enjoy and hope you had a Happy Halloween!!!

Applications and exhibitions

Is what I'm working on right now, so I'm a bit MIA but I've been meaning to post updates on projects etc...once I take good photos!

I'm applying to the Penland School of Crafts summer session work/study and scholarship, I really hope I get one of those offers. Penland is such a fantastic place to study, meet amazing artists and build up experience and one's portfolio.

I'd like to get into Lin Stanionis' workshop on moldmaking and casting, and if not Lin's workshop then definitely Jessica Calderwood, her painted enamels are amazing.

Wish me luck on the applications - and of course, thank you for reading!

I love playing with wax and mold making

Here is a shot of my mold of the starfish. I can't wait to see how it turns out. I had fun just waxing it onto the acrylic and using my heat gun.

I'll post shots of the negative relief and more! Pin It
