LIGHT Art + Design Gallery

Last weekend I went to the holiday exhibition opening Metal 3 at Light Art + Design Gallery in Chapel Hill, NC.  I'd heard many great things about this gallery, especially since several of my friends and ECU alumni are represented there, so I was very happy to be invited to stay at Tara Locklear's place and spend the evening in a city, that is so close that I'd never been to.

Light is owned by two interior designers so the aesthetic and feel of the gallery lends itself to a modern and visually appealing space.  I very much enjoyed the feel of the gallery, as well as ogling the gorgeous jewelry and sculpture on display.  I was also very happy to see Hoss Haley's pieces (that my Penland Class had seen in the process) exhibited!

This was also a celebration of sorts as I got to spend the evening with Sarah West and Tara Locklear, whom I haven't been with both at the same time in awhile.  The three of us were the older ladies in the ECU undergrad studio back in the day (about 3 years ago).  It was really great catching up with them and reliving old memories.

I hope you enjoy this post!

Of course, the ECU metalsmiths are very well represented.  Laura Wood and Zachary Lechtenburg are also represented by Light.

Momentary Myth the video

Momentary Myth from Eilisain on Vimeo.

So I finally did it, I had a video made of my jewelry.  I really wanted to wait until a week before the exhibition with Sim Asher, but I just couldn't wait any longer.  I've been holding onto the video for about a month, and I have the hardest time keeping secrets!

Spike Hoban directed and made the video and he is really talented.  I'm so lucky I got to have him work on it; Spike also directed Kat Cole and Dejan Jovanic's videos and well, if you've seen them you'll know what I'm talking about!

I hope you enjoy it!

New pieces

Just got these photos back from my good friend Tara Locklear, aren't they great?  These pieces were both in my senior exhibition.

My favorite is the Keeper necklace, it's such a statement piece that I can imagine a shaman wearing.  I call it the keeper because the turtle is said the be the keeper between realms of earth and water and combined with the beaver which is a builder of it's home, and is constantly working at perfect it's goal of building a dream.

The Deep Sea necklace is very close to home for me, the black coral is from Panama and the ammonite was gifted to me from a dear friend (Kat Cole).  It represents the change in time and how water can transform wildlife to a state of permanency.

I hope you like and thank you for visiting!

ECU graduating Spring exhibitions

More amazing exhibitions by ECU graduating students. Many of them my friends, so talented and passionate about their work.

Kat Cole and Abigail representing the ECU Metals graduate program put together a cohesive and expansive body of work. Both of them showing their skills not only in metals/jewelry but sculpture (Kat Cole) and paper/printmaking (Abigail Heuss).

Then there was the magical, almost faerie like worlds of Mike McAteer, using all sorts of material, polymer clay, epoxy, metal etc. to make his sculptural pieces.

And Linda Fox, whom I don't know very well but truly enjoyed her dreamy and deadly photographs, melding several images to create inner worlds of animals and landscapes of Eastern North Carolina.

There are still more shows coming up and I'll try to post more photos. Hope you enjoy!

So intricately detailed and special.

All of Mike's pieces are handmade,

I wouldn't want to be in this spider's web!

Progressive Landscape

Watch this wicked video of Kat Cole's sculptural work for her senior show - it's like delicious bite of goodness...leaving you wanting more. Kat is graduating this spring with an MFA in metals/jewelry at ECU and I sure am gonna miss her.

Gah, I'm SO proud and kinda, in awe, of Kat's work - she really does bust her ass in the studio! I've known Kat since I moved to Greenville and have truly found her as inspiration and mentor in the field. I think you will too after you see what she's making.
